This essential oil is extracted from the resin through a meticulous distillation process. It is an amber-colored, viscous oil with a sweet, peppery, and balsamic aroma.
This essential oil, akin to Balsam of Peru but with distinct characteristics, is derived from the resin of the Myroxylon toluiferum plant. The name "Tolu Balsam" is linked to Tolú, a municipality in Sucre Department, northern Colombia, and also refers to the pre-Columbian native people of the region.
Resin: Tolu resin is extracted from the tree by making incisions in the bark, which causes the tree to produce a yellow-brown, near-solid material. This thick resin is collected in drops, which, when dried, resembles fractured flint. The dry resin features a complex aroma with prominent notes of cinnamon and vanilla, complemented by a soft, floral fragrance. This unique aroma makes it valuable in pharmaceuticals and perfumery.
