The oil is extracted using the cold expression method from the fresh peel of Citrus bergamia Risso & Poiteau. It’s a clear, yellowish-green oil with a sweet, fruity scent.
The key components of this essential oil are linalyl acetate (60%) and linalool (22%). It also contains furocoumarins like bergapten, bergamottin, and citropten, along with some alcohol. Bergamot comes from a small, delicate tree in the Rutaceae family, similar in appearance to other citrus trees like oranges and lemons. This tree produces orange-like fruits twice a year, and the oil is primarily extracted from the fresh fruit peel, though the rind, leaf, and twig can also be used. While native to Asia, bergamot is mainly cultivated in Calabria, Italy.
